Summer Dance Party at Galena! On Sunday, July 19, from 5 – 9 pm, the Great Basin Group will highlight their Keep Washoe Wild campaign at a musical dance event which will take place in the newly restored Fish Hatchery at Galena Creek Regional Park. The night will be wild with games with door prizes to a great 3-piece dance band! Finger foods and soft drinks will be provided too. (Members may BYOB.) To help reduce waste, we're also asking everyone to bring their own reusable drinking cup or wine glass. We will be charging $10 per person to help defray a portion of our cost. And to ensure that we have enough food, please RSVP to GraceC Caudill by July 12 at 626-7873.
The Fish Hatchery is a stone building perfectly suited for the natural beauty that surrounds it: the outdoor patio area offers views of Galena Creek, Marilyn's Pond and the surrounding pine forest. Parking is limited so we beg you to carpool. (Carpoolers with at least 3-people per vehicle will get raffle tickets for door prizes.)
When the band takes a break, we'll update you on Keeping Washoe Wild. You'll learn about the Reno and Washoe County Open Space and Greenway Plans, the special areas dear to our heart that were included in the plans, and what you can do to help make these plans succeed. We'll also have maps out where you can mark your special area.
Directions: Galena Creek Park is seven miles up the Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) from the intersection with U.S. 395.Take the South (2nd) Entrance into the park. For more information, contact Valerie Andersen at (775) 828-0302.

| Learn about Nevada's Bats Nevada Dept. of Wildlife biologist, Jenni Jeffers, will tell us everything you ever wanted to know about the bats of Nevada at the Great Basin Group's next program meeting in September. Did you know that there are 23 species of bats in Nevada or that Reno has one of the largest bat colonies in the state? Or, that bats eat thousands of mosquitos each night and fewer than half of one-percent contract rabies? Using radio telemetry and night vision equipment, Jenni has conducted extensive research to learn about their foraging, hibernation, migration, and roosting locations. At the meeting you'll learn about her research and the measures that the NDOW is taking to help protect Nevada's rapidly dwindling bat population. All programs are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Valerie Andersen at (775) 828-0302. Date: Sept. 10 Time: 7:00 social, 7:30 Program. Location: Bartley Ranch Regional Park, Reno. Posted: Jun 19, 2009 | GBG Calendar Photo ContestMany of our Great Basin Group members have been taking superb photos on our outings, and many of these have been uploaded to our "Gallery" at our home page. We'd like to give our GBG members more reason to keep taking those fine photos by conducting a contest for 12 photos for a 2010 calendar. Photos must have been taken on any scheduled outing of the GBG (listed in our outings calendar at any time, past or present). The photo must include one or more GBG members in a natural setting. A maximum of 3 photo entries per member is allowed. The deadline for photo submission is August 15, 2009. Submit your entries to David von Seggern (vonseg1@sbcglobal.net) . Entries for judging must be less than 1 MB, so reduce as necessary. Keep the original high-resolution format for later submission in case your photo is judged to be a winner. Entries will be judged by an independent panel of photo experts on the basis of our theme of enjoying the natural beauty of the GBG area. No more than 2 winning photos per person. The 12 winning photos will be published in a calendar available on the web for ordering. Winners each receive a free calendar.
Posted: Jun 14, 2009 | 101 Mile Summer Challenge Be a 101-miler this summer. Back by popular demand, the Great Basin Group outings will track your hiking mileage this summer starting now. Check the calendar of outings and get started. Ask your hike leader for the green 101-mile card and get started towards a healthy goal while enjoying the great outdoors. Evening and weekend hikes qualify for mileage. In September, we will again recognize our 101-milers with a dinner and certificate. Posted: May 11, 2009 | Sierra Club Stock Items for SaleEarth Day was big for our sales of books and Sierra Club items, but we have lots of stock left over. Books, packs, hats, travel bags, T-shirts, etc. Check the list and call Steve Foster (775-329-4123) for arrangements to get the merchandise. Steve will also be at the monthly meetings and happy to sell you these items then. We make only a small amount on these items and do this more as a member service than as a fundraiser.
